Using projectors and textbooks, Mrs. Brown’s 3rd grade class is working together to understand parallel lines.
The lesson Mrs. Brown prepared for her class took full advantage of the technology Wasatch Elementary has to offer. Using a special camera, designed to project a workbook up on a board, Mrs. Brown went through examples of different parallelograms while asking the class various questions. As Mrs. Brown explained different aspects of the shapes on the board, students worked on their own identical workbooks, copying or working out problems as directed by Mrs. Brown. Once they had finished their instruction, the students worked individually while Mrs. Brown answered questions.
This geometry lesson helped fulfill the common core standard that 3rd graders should “Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.”
Mrs. Brown used both modern technology and traditional print to ensure her classroom was an immersive experience. Every student learns a bit differently from different ways of teaching. Some students may thrive using a print format, while others may understand better through using a screen. Mrs. Brown was able to teach all different types of leaners, at the same time, through her innovative techniques. Lessons such as this will help all students develop the skills they need to understand math.
