Lakeview Fourth Graders “Link” Together to Write Stories

Lakeview fourth grade students are working hard to write stories, except they aren’t using a paper and pencil this time.

The students in Mrs. Eatough’s class are using ChromeBooks to write their own stories in a program called GoogleDocs. GoogleDocs is very similar to Microsoft Word in the fact that an original piece of writing is able to be typed up and saved. However, GoogleDocs actually allows individuals to share their document with other individuals and allows both parties to type on the GoogleDoc at the same time. Through utilization of this program, the students are not only able to write their own stories, but they are able to have other students in their class edit their document as well.

This method of technology utilization speeds up the process of writing through using the more efficient mode of typing, while also enablings peers to edit one another’s papers electronically. This allows the papers to be easier to read and the student can visually see what changes their peers are making as they revise their paper.

Through this activity, the students are completing one of the core writing standards, which states: “with some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.”

Lakeview is one of the many schools who work to integrate technology into the classroom. Through this utilization, students are receiving an enhanced education that is preparing them to perform well in our technological society. #ProvoGotSkills
