Edgemont Fifth Graders “State” the Facts

Edgemont fifth graders are “state”ing the facts through their presentation of research they have done on one of the 50 states.

Recently, the teachers had each student select one of the 50 states to research. The students learned about reliable internet sources and were given a rubric with guidelines on what was needed to be researched. The students completed the research in class and then put all of the information into a Google Slide presentation to show their classmates.

After learning about each other’s states, the students were then instructed to create a float, like one used in parades, that represented important key facts about their selected state. This part of the project was done at home with assistance from parents. Each student brought in their float and displayed them so that other students in the school could come learn about their state through this presentation.

Through this project, the students were able to complete the core writing standard of “conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic”.

All in all, students were able to participate in a positive, hands-on project that allowed them to, not only complete the core standard, but learn important research strategies as well.
