Last Friday, Amelia Earhart students used their imagination and reading comprehension skills to participate in the 3rd bi-annual Amelia Earhart Society of Literary Scholars challenge.

For this activity, each class completed four tasks that correlated with the four books of the month they have read this year. It was set up like an escape room, where the students had to finish one task before they could continue to the next one. The books for grades 4-6 included “The War That Saved My Life” by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” by J.K. Rowling, “Cloud and Wallfish” by Anne Nesbet, and “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. The challenges included tasks such as writing messages that could only be read in a mirror while avoiding a basilisk and Moaning Myrtle, creating clouds that represented their self-portraits, writing with their non-dominant hand like the main character in “The War that Saved My Life” and creating a self-portrait.

The lower grade students have read “We’re All Wonders” by R.J. Palacio, “The Bad Beginning” by Lemony Snicket, “Appleblossom the Possum” by Holly Goldbery Sloan, and “The Night Gardner” by the Fan Brothers. These students were challenged with different tasks that included: making an anagram of their names, competing in a “possum pouch bounce”, creating their own animal shaped topiary, and crafting a self-portrait with a sentence about what makes them wonderful.

The winners of the challenge were Mrs. Hirz’ class (upper grades) and Miss Mann’s class (lower grades).

Through this activity, students were able to further accomplish the goal of the Amelia Earhart Society of Literary Scholars – which is to be exposed to quality literature, while also encouraging a life-long love of reading.
