Policy No. 4090 Drone/Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Use

The Provo City School District Board of Education has established that safety for students, employees, and visitors is one of the most significant priorities of the district. At times, technology-based (and other) innovations must be regulated to retain and monitor a high level of safety for all persons throughout the district, including in instructional settings.

The superintendent is directed to develop procedures related current and future drone/UAS operation.

In the interest of safety to students, staff, and property, the Provo City School District Board of Education has authorized school and district administration to ensure that only the district Communication Department shall own and operate a drone on behalf of the district in accordance with all applicable state and federal (FAA) regulations and requirements.

Additionally, any outside organization or community member wishing to operate a drone or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) on district property for district sponsored purposed must follow the guidelines outlined in Policy 4090 P2 and in accordance with all applicable state and federal (FAA) regulations and requirements.

High schools in Provo City School District are members of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). The UHSAA has banned the use of drones/UASs from all athletic events. Subsequently, Provo City School District abides by this standard established by the UHSAA and prohibits such use at all athletic events and activities.

Outside of the guidelines outlined above, students, staff and patrons are not permitted to bring drones/UASs to school or operate drones on school grounds at any time.
