Policy 3416 P7 Administration of Medication: Student Possession and Self-Administration of Asthma Medication

Students are permitted to possess and self-administer asthma medication (prescription or nonprescription, inhaled medication) if:

  1. The student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) complete the “Asthma Action Plan” form with the school nurse and health care provider, authorizing and confirming:
    • the student is responsible for, and capable of self-administering the asthma medication; 
    • it is medically appropriate for the student to self-administer asthma medication and be in possession of asthma medication at all times; and 
    • the name of the asthma medication prescribed or authorized for the student’s use.

Authorization for the ability to carry and/or self-administer medication may be denied or withdrawn by the school at any time following actual notice to the student’s parent(s)/legal guardian(s).
