Utah Symphony Visits District Elementary School Students

Yesterday, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students around the district had the opportunity to watch the Utah Symphony play in Timpview’s auditorium.

The students learned how classical music pieces can tell a story and how to listen for certain instruments that are key factors in the story. The symphony played pieces such as “Night on Bald Mountain”, a piece that represented Beauty and the Beast and many more. The conductor pointed out the specific instruments that represented characters and helped the story come to life for the students.

The symphony visited Timpview as part of their “Symphony in the Schools” program, where they visit various schools all throughout Utah to present 50 minute concerts. Prior to the visit, teachers are provided with materials to help prepare their students for the concert. They are also given activity suggestions to help support the music core curriculum.

Towards the end of the concert, the students were taught an important lesson on handling peer pressure. The orchestra conductor introduced them to a piece that told a story about the various stages of peer pressure and even had the students sing along. He described parts of the piece having resemblance to phrases such as “come on, do it”, “nervous tapping…”, “But it’s not right” and many more.

Students were able to, not only hear the Utah Symphony perform, but also learn important life lessons through classical music. Thank you to the Utah Symphony for educating our students on the power of music and thank you to all those who made their visit possible.
