Kids at Amelia Earhart Eat Enemy Pie

Once a month, for the past 5 years, Amelia Earhart Elementary has introduced a new book to their students as part of the school’s Earhart Literacy Community. For certain months, the teachers will choose a different book for the lower grades – sometimes, fourth graders and older will read a classic chapter book – but this month the entire school has the same feature: Enemy Pie. The teachers and administration are excited for the students to enjoy its charming art style, and take its important message about showing kindness and getting to know your enemies.

In order to properly unveil the story to the students, the Literacy Community has a host of fun activities planned. Children are encouraged to draw self portraits in the style of the book’s illustrations, as well as create recipes for their version of “enemy pie.” For completing these activities, the students are awarded with their own handmade pin to attach to their backpacks, as well as personal boxed hand pie to enjoy.

TheLiteracy Community aims to connect students inside the walls of the schools with their peers, which they might not have had a chance to get to know yet. By collectively reading the same books, the administration believes the children will have a unifying experience and thus have more ways to connect with each other. While these aims may go over the heads of the students themselves, they don’t seem to mind. The books the school highlights tend to be favorites of the children who participate, even in the years to come.

Each teacher and administrator involved in the project is excited and eager to talk about the event as they prepare to share it with the students of the school. The level of excitement is infectious, and illustrates how much each of the teachers and administrators love their jobs. Projects like these go on in each school in the district, tailored by the teachers to the unique needs and situations of the students in their school. Estudiantes de Amelia Earhart se comen el pastel del enemigo

Una vez al mes, desde hace 5 años, Amelia Earhart Elementary ha presentado un nuevo libro a sus alumnos como parte de la Comunidad de Alfabetización Earhart de la escuela. En ciertos meses, los maestros eligen un libro diferente para los grados inferiores – a veces, los alumnos de cuarto grado y mayores leen un libro clásico de capítulos – pero este mes toda la escuela tiene la misma opción: Enemy Pie. Los maestros y la administración están entusiasmados con que los alumnos disfruten de su encantador estilo artístico y se lleven su importante mensaje sobre mostrar amabilidad y conocer a tus enemigos.

Para desvelar adecuadamente la historia a los alumnos, la Comunidad de Alfabetización tiene planeada una serie de actividades divertidas. Se anima a los niños a dibujar autorretratos al estilo de las ilustraciones del libro, así como a crear recetas para su versión del “pastel del enemigo”. Por completar estas actividades, los alumnos son premiados con su propio pin hecho a mano para fijar en sus mochilas, así como con una tarta de mano en caja personal para disfrutar.

La Comunidad de Alfabetización tiene como objetivo conectar a los estudiantes dentro de las paredes de las escuelas con sus compañeros, a los que quizás no hayan tenido la oportunidad de conocer todavía. Al leer colectivamente los mismos libros, la administración cree que los niños tendrán una experiencia unificadora y, por tanto, más formas de conectar entre sí. Aunque estos objetivos pueden pasar por encima de los propios alumnos, a ellos no parece importarles. Los libros que la escuela destaca suelen ser los favoritos de los niños que participan, incluso en los años siguientes.

Todos los profesores y administradores que participan en el proyecto están entusiasmados y deseosos de hablar sobre el evento mientras se preparan para compartirlo con los alumnos de la escuela. El nivel de entusiasmo es contagioso e ilustra lo mucho que cada uno de los profesores y administradores ama su trabajo. Proyectos como éste se llevan a cabo en todas las escuelas del distrito, adaptados por los maestros a las necesidades y situaciones únicas de los alumnos de su escuela.
