4130 P1 Enrollment in Remediation, Credit Recovery and Independence High School
Remediation Courses
Meeting competency in all required core classes will be defined as receiving a “D” grade or better in a class. Any student in grades 7 to 12 who receives an “F” in an English, mathematics, or science required core class has failed to meet the competency level.
Students who do not meet competency levels in required core classes – English, mathematics, and science– may be required to take remediation classes. A remediation course is designed to provide focused intervention to develop a student’s specific academic skill. It is not designed to cover the breadth of the core content standards.
Students are not required to repeat a required core class when competency is not met but are encouraged to attend and complete or pass the remediation class.
Remediation classes will be offered during the regular school day, after-school, or summer school. An approved online program may also be provided.
Remediation may not constitute reason to retain a student in a grade level. Students who fail any of the required core classes will be allowed a registration in the next high grade while completing remediation classes.
Students with an IEP will be exempted from remediation requirements if they are meeting IEP requirements. Transportation to and from remediation classes outside of the school day is the responsibility of students and parents.
Credit Recovery Courses
Students in grades 9 to 12 will be evaluated as often as necessary to determine their progress toward graduation. If a high school student doe not pass a core class required for graduation, the student will be placed in a credit recovery course. Credit recovery courses are designed to enable students to master the core content standards.
Credit Recovery courses may be provided at each of the district’s high schools during the regular school day, after-school, or summer school. An approved online program will also be provided. The online credit recovery classes may be structured to enable students to earn 1/8th of credit by successfully completing the class.
Fees will be charged for online credit recovery classes according to the current fee schedule adopted by the Board of Education.
Independence High School
Students in grades 10-12th that have failed to meet competency in required core courses or who may benefit from a smaller learning environment may apply for enrollment into the district’s Independence High School. Space is limited and students may need to meet minimum expectations in the following prior to enrollment:
- Total credits
- Attendance
- Behavior
In addition, students may be placed at Independence High School through the District’s screening process facilitated by Student Services.
Once a student enrolls, Independence High School will become the student’s official home school, and students will not be permitted to transfer back to the school of origin unless there is a specific educational need and both principals agree to the transfer.
Classes will be structured to enable students to facilitate the accumulation of credit. The school will provide a variety of learning options to students to meet their individual needs, including but not limited to Day School, PM School, Online School, and Pre-Adult Education. The sole mission of the Alternative High School is to provide flexible programs that enable students to complete a high school diploma.
Students that complete the minimum graduation requirements while enrolled at Independence High School will receive a high school diploma. The school will offer a graduation ceremony to recognize these students.
School fees will be charged to students enrolled at the beginning of the school year according to the current fee schedule adopted by the Board of Education. The District will provide transportation to the school.
