Policy No. 7220 Notification of Threats of Harm or Violence
Any student or employee of Provo City School District will be notified in a timely manner if they are the subject of any threats of harm or violence. Parents of students who are subject of threats of harm or violence will also be notified. In any case of a specific threat to the health and safety of any student of other individual, the district may disclose information from education records to the parties whose knowledge of the information is necessary (i.e., law enforcement). The timing and details of the notice will be as extensive as allowed by the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other legal limitations, directions from law enforcement, and / or the circumstances involved.
Threats of violence or harm toward individuals are defined as any threat that creates fear of physical harm to a specific person that is communicated directly or indirectly by any means.
Threats of violence or harm toward a school district building or property is defined as any direct or indirect communication by any means with the intent to cause damage to the building / property, or to harm students, employees, volunteers, community members, and/or visitors.
Provo City School District will address threats of harm or violence in a manner consistent with the district’s safety policies and in accordance with Utah State Law.
Any person found to have made threats of violence or harm against any district property, student(s), employee(s) or others will be subject to the discipline policies of Provo City School District and will be referred to the appropriate community agencies, including law enforcement. District staff will work closely with appropriate personnel and/or advisors, both in the district and in the community, to address threats of violence or harm, those threatened and those making the threats. Principals/supervisors will be instructed to communicate necessary information about the individual(s) making the threats to teachers and staff.
