There’s an apartment built for those in need by the Food and Care Coalition. Outside of the room hangs a plaque with a quote. The quote is from the Dalai Lama, and it reads: “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”
This quote was chosen by its donor, and the plaque stands to commemorate the donation used to furnish the apartment. The donation came from Timpview as part of their Sub for Santa Drive, who gathers tens of thousands of dollars in donations for charities each year.
Specifically, Timpview High School Student Government works with community charities yearly to increase and improve fundraising efforts for families in need through their Sub for Santa drive. Timpview Teacher and Student Government Advisor Cassidy Baker offered information on their Food and Care Coalition visit. Thank you, Cassidy, for sharing this story, delivering service-oriented and outreach opportunities for our students, and organizing aid each season.
“Last year during our Sub for Santa, we worked with two of our community charities, United Way and the Food & Care Coalition, to help make our fundraising go to the most significant needs in our community. As we spoke with these leaders, we saw some areas where our Sub for Santa funds could go further.
“During the Food and Care Coalition Visit, their staff was building some short-term facilities to house families and individuals. We found out that the cost to furnish an entire apartment came in around $5,000. We decided to try and raise funds we could put towards more long-term efforts to create sustained change like furnishing an apartment.
“We found a local donor willing to match whatever money we donated towards furnishing a room. In the end, we donated $15,000 for three rooms at the Food and Care, and then the donor matched that with donating the funds for three other rooms. We could have our school logo and a chosen quote for each apartment.
“This last October, we could tour one of those rooms we helped furnish. We also received a tour of the entire Food and Care Coalition building. On this last tour, we noticed some items had a shortage at their storefront. This storefront is an area of the building where community members in need could receive needed items like shampoo, soap, and flashlights, to name a few.
“This year, we hope to help the Food and Care Coalition by collecting some of these lesser-stocked items.”
