Recently, several avid readers from PCSD schools were selected to attend an event celebrating fairy tale books. This event was named “Island of the Lost Boys”.
Throughout the year, student put their name in a drawing as they read books from a specific reading list. The more books a student read, the better chance they had to be selected in the drawing. Eventually, 10 students from each school were selected from this drawing to attend this fun event.
The event was held at the Provo Recreational Center, where students were greeted with a gift bag filled with books, gift certificates, pens, treats and many more things. The students were also able to use the Recreational Center facilities to swim and play many different fun sports.
At the event, the students interacted with pirates, fairies and even a safari guide as they looked for a “golden ticket”. If they were able to find the golden ticket, they were awarded with a brand new book.
Overall, this was a fun, successful event that really helped to further instigate a love of reading in these students and students around the district as well. We want to thank the many businesses who helped to sponsor this event, which include Follett, UEN, Scholastic Books, Sam’s Club, Target, BYU’s Children’s Literature Department and The Results Company. We also want to thank the PCSD librarians, who volunteered to help run this event and the Provo Recreational Center for the use of their facilities.
