5-year-old’s Birthday Books

What did you do for your birthday when you were five years old? For Caroline Spadafora, to celebrate the year that she is learning how to read, she gathered a collection of books to donate to the Franklin school library. Caroline is homeschooled, but that didn’t stop her from choosing to support her local school and the children who attended it.

The books that were donated were well loved already. They were sourced from personal connections, such as house guests, aunts and grandmas, as well as the family’s personal library. The books that had already been precious to one group of people and would go on to be precious to a new audience.

To receive the girl and her books were a number of kids from the school’s Student Council. The sixth graders were excited to have the new books in their libraries, as well as grateful for the families’ generosity. One of them found a book that he could not put down during the entire experience. Looking over it from front to back, he tentatively asked the adults in the room if he could take it home with him. Of course, he was met with a resounding, “Yes!”

The act of donating is nothing new for the five year old. Every year, her mother has her donate items related to things that she is working on at the time. Last year, when she turned 4, she was learning how to brush her teeth. To honor this, she donated toothbrushes and toothpaste to those in need. Her mother hopes she can instill a feeling of joy in giving in her daughter from a young age.

Caroline Spadafora celebró el año en que aprendió a leer juntando una colección de libros para donarlos a la biblioteca de la escuela Franklin. Caroline se educa en casa, pero eso no le impidió decidir apoyar a su escuela y a los alumnos que van a ella.

Los libros que se donaron ya eran muy queridos. Se obtuvieron de conexiones personales, como invitados de la casa, tías y abuelas, así como de la biblioteca personal de la familia. Los libros que ya habían sido valiosos para un grupo de personas pasarían a serlo para un nuevo público.

A recibir a la niña y sus libros llegaron algunos niños del Consejo Estudiantil de la escuela. Los alumnos de sexto grado estaban emocionados por tener los nuevos libros en su biblioteca, así como agradecidos por la generosidad de las familias. Uno de ellos encontró un libro que no pudo dejar durante toda la experiencia. Mirándolo de arriba a abajo, preguntó tímidamente a los adultos de la sala si podía llevárselo a casa. Por supuesto, se encontró con un rotundo “¡Sí!”.

El acto de donar no es algo nuevo para esta niña de cinco años. Todos los años, su madre la hace donar artículos relacionados con las cosas en las que está aprendiendo en ese momento. El año pasado, cuando cumplió 4 años, estaba aprendiendo a cepillarse los dientes. Así, donó cepillos de dientes y pasta dentífrica a los más necesitados. Su madre espera poder inculcar a su hija la alegría de dar desde una edad temprana.
