Policy 4410 Graduation and Related Requirements

The Provo City School District Board of Education approves curriculum and instruction standards, competency measures, and high school graduation requirements in accordance with Utah laws and administrative rules. Graduation from Provo City School District represents the culmination of each student’s public school education.

One of the paramount purposes of a K-12 education in Provo City School District is to prepare students for graduation. All efforts in the district support the successful graduation of all of our students. All students are expected to complete each school year fully prepared for the next school year (and course of study therein), and to graduate from the district ready for life after high school. High graduation rates throughout the district are expected to be the outcome of the district’s academic program.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure clear and consistent communication of applicable standards, measures, and requirements to its patrons. Further, the policy and procedure offer useful and relevant guidance so that every student has the opportunity to earn a high school diploma.

The board encourages individualized and flexible educational options for students when appropriate. Generally speaking, students entering the high school program in grade 9 are anticipated to graduate from the school/district after four school years. At the same time, the district’s academic program is intended to be responsive when a student progresses at either a more rapid or deliberate rate that may vary from the usual 4-year high school duration. The district allows interested students the option to graduate early. To do so, all graduation criteria must be met, including the successful completion of required courses and credits. The board also wishes to emphasize the importance of graduation for all students, and is therefore committed to assisting students who may need a little more time to accomplish this important milestone.

The district recognizes that a student’s graduation is a culmination of years of planning and successful completion of many requirements. Students with IEPs may participate in graduation ceremonies as described in Policy 4160. Participation in the graduation ceremony is a privilege, not a protected right.

The board directs the superintendent to develop procedures that clearly delineate graduation credits and other criteria requisite to graduating from Provo City School District.
