Policy No. 7215 Use of Tobacco and Nicotine Substances on School Premises
To protect students from the addictive substance of nicotine, and in conjunction with the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act, the Provo City School District Board of Education mandates that all employees and officers of the school district, and all members of the surrounding community, refrain from the use of tobacco products on school property at all times. “Tobacco” includes, but is not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, snuff, smoking tobacco, smokeless tobacco, nicotine, e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivering devices, any chemical and/or device which simulates the same flavor and/or physical effect of nicotine substances and any other tobacco innovation.
Use of such products by staff, students and community members is prohibited on district property at all times: buildings, grounds, parking lots, vehicles and all other district owned property.
Upon receiving and presenting to school administrators a physician’s prescription, FDA approved nicotine replacement therapy is permitted. However, all applicable policies pertaining to the use of medication by students must be followed.
School district employees are responsible for the enforcement of this policy. All district employees and students are subject to discipline upon failure to comply with this policy. In accordance with state law, any visitors and members of the community seen smoking on district property will be asked to stop; individuals failing to comply with the directive will be asked to leave the property immediately.
