4125 P3 Enrollment in District Camp Big Springs with Limited Student Access: Elementary School Camp Big Springs Enrollment and Selection of Students for the District’s Outdoor Education Program

Camp Big Springs is an optional outdoor education program offered in June of each year for students who are between fifth and sixth grade levels. This program is an extension of the District’s current 5th grade STEM curriculum. Those students who elect to participate spend up to five days at a camp located up the South Fork of Provo Canyon. The participating students will be involved in classes which include activities such as hands-on science experiences, arts and crafts, sports and recreation, and campfire programs. This is a cost program. Scholarships are available for eligible students.

Camp Big Springs Application Process and Timelines

District-level Camp Big Springs orientation meetings will be held in February each school year to inform students and parents of the programs, the enrollment processes, and the commitment expected of students and parents who choose to participate. Notice of orientation meetings will be coordinated with each school and the 5th grade teachers. Information will be sent home with every 5th grade student and will also be advertised on the Provo City School District website.

All applications for current Provo City School District students will be accepted online via the PowerSchool parent portal during the open enrollment window. Please note that physical applications for current Provo City School District students are no longer offered or accepted at the individual school level. Physical applications are available for out-of-district students who live in Provo from the Provo School District Auxiliary Services Building. Completed physical applications must be returned in person to the Provo School District Auxiliary Services Building. (see # 2 below)

Student Enrollment in 5th Grade Big Springs Camp

Camp Big Springs is committed to providing the best experience possible. Based upon allocated resources and natural constraints in staff and facilities, the District caps enrollment at 140 students per week. The weekly enrollment cap allows the District to ensure Big Spring Camp’s resources and staff can sufficiently support and provide adequate opportunities for campers consistent with the program’s resources and goals.

Enrollment Priority for Camp Big Springs

Current Provo School District 5th grade students who apply during the open enrollment window will be enrolled into Camp Big Springs subject to all other District requirements for participation. The District will consider all applications received after the open enrollment window closes based upon availability and consistent with the priority-status categories set forth below.

The priority-status categories are as follows:

  1. Current Student (In-District Students):

    • Applicant students who are enrolled in a Provo City School District school at the time of application will have first-priority status to enroll in Camp Big Springs.
  2. Non-District Student (Live in Boundary):

    • Applicant students who are applying to participate in Camp Big Springs who live within Provo City School District boundaries at the time of application, but are not enrolled as a student in a Provo City School District school, will have second-priority status to enroll in Camp Big Springs (contingent upon space availability).

Cost and Additional Requirements for Non-District Students

All Non-District Students who live within Provo City School District boundaries who participate in Camp Big Springs will be required to pay the full cost of camp. Additionally, Non-District Students shall be required to complete all District paperwork, enrollment information, and releases to be considered for Camp enrollment.

Enrollment Period

General registration opens the third Tuesday in February and closes the second Friday in March. At this point placements will be determined and announced (see parent letter). In the event that space is still available after general registration, the district will continue to accept applications until the last Friday in March or the program becomes full. In the event that applications for enrollment exceed capacity, the District may implement a lottery process or take other reasonable steps to fairly allocate its scarce resources.

If you have questions regarding the enrollment process, please contact the Director of Camp Big Springs by email at campadmin@provo.edu or by phone at 801-374-4947.
