This book for this week’s PCSD Summer Reading Series is “Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type” by Doreen Cronin.
This book follows a group of cows with a typewriter and the demands that they create for Farmer Brown. This book is 2001 Caldecott Honor and has been bringing joy to children and adults alike for almost 20 years. The illustrations by Betsy Lewin are cartoonish and fun. The expressions on the cows’ faces are sure to bring to a smile to anyone’s face.
The book is inspired by Cronin’s father, a police officer, who she describes as a “cross between John Wayne and Jackie Gleason.” The majority of the book was written in one night as Cronin was having trouble sleeping following the death of her father. Cronin describes the experience as “I sat down at my computer and ‘Click, Clack, Moo’ just came out of me. It was just 20 minutes at the computer. It was like I was channeling it.”
The book was so popular that it spawned a “Click, Clack” series with 10 books all revolving around farm animals and what they can accomplish while working together.
Tune in to the Provo City School District Facebook page at 12pm tomorrow (Tuesday) to watch a Facebook Live reading of “Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type.”
