You’ve heard the adage, “It takes a village to raise a child.” At the Get The Scoop on Career and Technical Education (CTE) event, many prominent schools, educators and local industry partners direct attention to career pathways and educate the youth of Provo– all while sharing a treat or two.

From UVU, UVU Aviation, MTECH, MTECH Diesel Tech, Provo City School District’s BioTechnology, LifeFlight, our neighboring Nebo District, and more, 60+ booths shared insights about their career paths to the primarily middle-school-aged visitors.

From the aroma of fresh cookies and chocolate confectionery wafting from our school’s teaching kitchen to the gliding whir of derby wheels from the Architectural Drafting room, activities abound to kick off conversations about career paths, clusters, and concurrent enrollment opportunities.

You might ask yourself why so many educational stakeholders and community partners would feel the need to band together for an event like Get the Scoop– and there is a significant reason. The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) sums up the event’s value well:

“Utah’s vision is to see that every student takes advantage of the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school, understanding that through advanced academic training, they will save time and money, enabling them to earn an industry license or an associate degree quickly.”

According to USBE, more than 27,000 high school juniors and seniors earned 188,000 college-level credit hours statewide–all starting with events like the Get the Scoop event.

Booths for all interests and dreams were prepared across the following career clusters:

  • Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources
  • Architecture & Construction
  • Arts, Audio Visual & Communications
  • Business, Finance & Marketing
  • Computer Science & Information Technology
  • Education & Training
  • Engineering & Technology
  • Health Science
  • Hospitality & Tourism
  • Human Services
  • Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security
  • Manufacturing
  • Transportation, Distribution & Logistics

It’s hard to encapsulate how jam-packed with activities Provo High was that evening; you could find animal petting areas, refrigeration trainers, brush bots, logo creation stations, an AI marketing test lab, an Operation Game station, a robotic arm competition, a coding puzzle, surgery simulators, cosmetology booths, cybersecurity demos, firefighting gear, welding stations, thermal drones–and ice cream. And cookies.

For all its treats, the Get the Scoop Event was a meaningful first step on their path towards high school achievement– but more importantly, life fulfillment and security. We think that’s pretty sweet.

A huge thank you to our many representatives, teachers, and specialists from Nebo, MTech, Provo City School District, and UVU. It’s a massive undertaking to ensure that we prepare our youth for the future, and you make that possible.
