Elementary schools across the Provo City School District united together on May 1st to make wishes come true and celebrate “Wishtree” day.
“Wishtrees” were placed at elementary school libraries throughout the district this years and students were given a chance to write down and attach wishes to their school’s tree. It was inspired by the district wide recommended book “Wishtree” by Katherine Applegate. The book features many instances of both wishing and people doing acts of service to help wishes come true. As a final reminder of the what this book teaches, Provo elementary schools spent the day doing service, wearing t-shirts and adding their own wishes to the wish tree.
Each school was allowed to choose how they wanted to celebrate “Wishtree” day. One way that Provo Peaks decided to celebrate was by taking a group picture with their yellow “Bright Future” t-shirts. Other schools, such as Rock Canyon, made an alligator out of beads and rope to be donated to children in impoverished areas all across the world. They also had yellow pieces of paper in the schools front foyer featuring stories written by students. Provost elementary gave students to option sacrifice a bit of their recess time to write down wishes on a ribbon that would be tied to a tree by the playground. Canyon Crest decided to give students time to write kind letters to important people in their lives. These are just some of the examples of how our elementary schools did “Wishtree” day, serving the people around them and making the world a brighter place.
“Wishtree” day was more than just a way to get elementary students reading. It was a day devoted to kindness and service. Service is a lifelong skill that can benefit communities, giving young kids reasons to serve can help develop the skills and help them grow into helpful and kind people.
