All students from kindergarten to sixth grade get the opportunity to participate in Franklin Elementary’s music program with Music Specialist, Kayla Spurlock. Twice a week for thirty minutes the students spend time practicing their singing, reading, writing and composing music on all different levels.
For the sixth graders at Franklin, their practice requires the help of computers and a cool software program called GarageBand. GarageBand is a digital audio workstation that allows users to create their own music with MIDI keyboards, loops and various sound effects.
During their time with Spurlock, the sixth graders get to compose their own unique piece of music by experimenting with the sound tools offered on this application. By using this program, the students get to create and produce music that sounds similar to the popular tunes they hear on the radio. Spurlock explains that GarageBand is a great way for her students to explore an area of music, such as producing, that might turn into a future career path for them.
Spurlock loves working with her students and says that it is fun to watch the kids get excited about music as they compose pieces that are special to them. When the students complete their compositions in the next couple of weeks, they will get to share their work with the rest of the class.
