Last week, Lakeview sixth graders used their classroom to open up their very own businesses.
This annual activity allows for students to have the opportunity to get a glimpse of what it is like to operate a business in the real world. Students were instructed to develop a business plan, do market research and develop a product. The different products included everything from homemade slime to a soda shop titled “Sodalightful”. The students were very creative and really worked hard to create a product that would appeal to their audience.
The students set up different booths for their individual businesses, either by themselves or with a partner, and each booth had its own unique sign that advertised the business in a creative way. Students from other grades, as well as the sixth graders, were the customers in this scenario and used fake money called “Barbara Bucks” to buy the products. As part of the activity, the business owners had to learn all about product, market, cost and even how to pay taxes.
Through this activity, students of all grades were able to benefit from this hands-on experience, which allowed them to practice both their math and finance skills. They were able to get a glimpse into the real-world of running a business, as well as experience the triumphs and the struggles that a business owner often goes through.
