Women United Visit Tiny Preschoolers

Day after day, the tiny students of Sunrise Preschool come to school ready to learn at desks perfect for their small stature, from a well-prepared teacher who is excited to engage with them, and along with friends who are just as curious about the world as they are.

Though these little learners probably expected today to be just a normal Thursday, they had some very kind visitors – a group of about 15 volunteers from Women United. As part of United Way’s Day of Caring celebration, each classroom had volunteers read the story I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont.

The book celebrates self-acceptance and self-love with its high levels of energy and imagination. The cheerful rhymes and wild illustrations captivate readers and highlight the beauty of differences and individuality. This ode to self-esteem encourages kids to appreciate everything about themselves – inside and out.

After the reading, kids then created a self-portrait using crayons, yarn, and googly eyes.

One of the volunteers helping with materials asked a little girl, “What color are your eyes?” As she lifted her head and looked up at her, she continued, “Wow! You’ve got beautiful blue eyes!”

The young artist then excitedly shouted, “Pink!,” stretched her arm as far as she could, and successfully retrieved the pink crayon that was just slightly bigger than her hand. With a smile on her face and joy in her eyes, the volunteer watched the little girl gleefully color most of her paper with her favorite color.

It is no secret that crayons spark a high level of excitement in kids; however, today was the first time some students used liquid glue. It was a major hit. As they dipped cotton swabs in the glue and did their best to apply it to the back of googly eyes, their eyes grew bigger and bigger. There was no hiding their fascination.

Women United strives to provide programs and opportunities that empower parents and the community to build children’s confidence, connections, and emotional health. Their visit today is only one example of their ongoing efforts to accomplish their goal. Some kids may not remember this experience for the rest of their lives, but they will always have their self-portrait to remember to like themselves.

Día tras día, los pequeños alumnos de Sunrise Preschool llegan a la escuela dispuestos a aprender en escritorios perfectos para su pequeña estatura, con una maestra bien preparada que está entusiasmada por interactuar con ellos y junto a amigos que también sienten curiosidad por el mundo.

Aunque estos chiquillos probablemente esperaban que el día de hoy fuera un jueves normal, tuvieron unos visitantes muy amables: un grupo de casi 15 voluntarias de Women United. Como parte de la celebración del Día de la Caridad por parte de United Way, los voluntarios leyeron en cada aula el cuento I Like Myself por Karen Beaumont.

El libro celebra la aceptación y el amor propio con sus altos niveles de energía e imaginación. Las divertidas rimas y las ilustraciones extravagantes cautivan al lector y destacan la belleza de las diferencias y la individualidad. Esta oda a la autoestima anima a los niños a apreciar todo lo que hay en ellos mismos, por dentro y por fuera.

Después de la lectura, los niños crearon su propio dibujo con crayones, hilo y ojitos.

Una de las voluntarias que ayudaba con los materiales preguntó a una niña: “¿De qué color son tus ojos?”. Cuando levantó la cabeza y la miró, continuó: “¡Vaya! Tienes unos ojos azules preciosos”.

Entonces, la joven artista gritó emocionada: ” ¡Rosado!”, estiró el brazo todo lo que pudo y logró recoger el crayón rosado que era un poco más grande que su mano. Con una sonrisa en la cara y alegría en los ojos, la voluntaria vio a la niña colorear alegremente la mayor parte de su papel con su color favorito.

No es ningún secreto que los crayones despiertan un alto nivel de emoción en los niños; sin embargo, hoy era la primera vez que algunos niños usaban pegamento líquido. Fue un gran éxito. Mientras mojaban hisopos de algodón en el pegamento y se esforzaban por aplicarlo en la parte posterior de los ojitos, sus ojos se hacían más y más grandes. Era imposible esconder su fascinación.

Women United se esfuerza por ofrecer programas y oportunidades que empoderen a los padres y a la comunidad para fomentar la confianza, las conexiones y la salud emocional de los niños. Su visita de hoy es sólo un ejemplo de sus continuos esfuerzos por lograr su objetivo.

Algunos niños quizá no recuerden esta experiencia durante el resto de sus vidas, pero siempre tendrán su propio dibujo para acordarse de quererse a sí mismos.
