Portuguese Consulate Visits Lakeview Elementary, Portuguese Dual Language Immersion Program

On January 16, 2025, a special delegation from the Portuguese Consulate made a visit to Lakeview Elementary School in Utah, as part of their tour of the state. The group, led by Francisco Duarte Lopes, the Ambassador of Portugal to the United States, was in Utah to celebrate the appointment of Luís Camara Manoel as Portugal’s first Honorary Consul to Utah.

The delegation, which also included Filipe Ramalheira, Consul-General of Portugal in San Francisco; Pedro Macedo Leão, Director in San Francisco; João Carlos Nunes Caixinha, Head of Education for the Camões Institute; and members from the Utah State Board of Education, stopped by Lakeview Elementary to learn more about its Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program.

Principal Jamie Davis-Leite welcomed the visitors, who were eager to see how the program is helping students develop bilingual skills in both Portuguese and English. The group had a chance to observe classrooms in action, where they interacted with students in Portuguese. The young learners proudly showcased their language abilities and cultural knowledge, much to the delight of the Ambassador and other visitors.

The visit was part of a larger tour celebrating Luís Camara Manoel’s new role as Honorary Consul to Utah. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the delegation to see firsthand the impact of Utah’s Portuguese Dual Language Immersion program, which Lakeview Elementary started several years ago, and has been fostering bilingualism and cultural understanding among students.

The visit was a heartwarming reminder of the importance of international relationships and cultural exchange, especially in educational settings. Lakeview Elementary’s commitment to diversity and language immersion continues to be a source of pride for the school and the community.
