Few can claim to know a building as intimately as Roy Davis, Timpview High Custodian, does—he knows the needs of the school and the people within it as if it were his own home. As part of Timpview’s first graduating class in 1978, Davis has spent his career caring for the halls he once walked as a student, becoming a school steward through every season and transition.
Now, as Timpview continues its construction, Davis prepares to say goodbye to a school and district that have been his life’s work.
This year is Roy’s final year with our district, but he doesn’t leave empty-handed; besides the many memories, Timpview High School staff organized a detailed nomination, earning Roy Davis of this month’s Provo Way Awards.
“Roy has been a Custodian in Provo City School District for over 38 years,” shares Jeff Hawkins, Custodial Services Coordinator. “Roy is very dependable. He very rarely misses work and is extremely dedicated to his job. He goes above and beyond to complete any task you assign him and has volunteered to help on many projects throughout the district.”
Davis’ dedication to excellence and school care is a universally recognized fact among colleagues. If there’s a need, Roy has likely already addressed it, given his keen eye for anticipating and resolving issues before they arise.
“Over the last year and four months, I have had the honor of working with Roy daily,” says Jessy Nielsen, Timpview’s Head Custodian. “Roy’s most considerable quality that I love is how he takes ownership of whatever task he is assigned and goes the extra mile!
“A perfect example is when I assigned Roy to the football stadium to do field maintenance and clean the grounds and bleachers. He was dedicated to this task and not only did what I asked but then did more. He weed-whacked around the football shed and cleaned all the debris under the east bleacher ramp. Again, I didn’t specifically ask for these items, but he did it anyway because it made his stadium look better!”
We love Nielsen’s distinction shared in his quote: the stadium is his stadium– Roy’s stadium. In many ways, Roy’s contributions make Timpview his home forever, and we are incredibly grateful for his care.
Yet Davis’ contributions are marked not just by his work ethic but by his warmth and humor. His cheerful demeanor has made an impression across the district.
“I have so enjoyed having Roy here at Timpview. He was here when I was hired and was always excellent at his job,” said Bruce Gabbitas, Timpview High Robotics Teacher. “I’ve enjoyed our conversations about Timpview, hobbies, and life as we’ve each been doing our work. What a gift to the school community to have Roy, who has been so steady and good at his job!”
When contemplating his long career, Davis remains humble as always. “The school has grown a little bigger since I attended back then. There was no Thunderdome, for starters,” he jokes.
Outside of work, Davis has a passion for assembling and painting model cars, a hobby he approaches with dedication and care. Clearly, Davis has an eye for details.
As Timpview prepares to continue its transformation with ongoing construction, Davis’ departure feels especially poignant. He leaves behind not just a well-manicured school but also staff and students who have been equally cared for. Davis’s spirit of hard work, kindness, and quiet perseverance continues on within Timpview’s ever-growing, ever-changing halls.
“Roy has been such a tremendous employee,” says Nielsen. “Words cannot describe how much he will be missed.”
