On March 13, the Provo City School District will host its 25th Annual Choral Festival. The festival, which is open to all, has become a mainstay event for the Provo choral community.
This special community concert is a testament to the district’s commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and community among its students. Since its inception in 2000, the festival has been an example of how the arts can bring people together. Every year, elementary school choirs from across the district gather to share their passion for music, showcase their honed skills, and witness the growth of their peers.
In its early years, the festival started modestly, with choirs from Wasatch and Spring Creek Elementary Schools performing in the Maeser Building at Brigham Young University. Over time it gained momentum and increased in significance. What began as a gathering of a few schools now involves more than 700 students each year, with all 13 elementary schools in the district sending their young singers to participate.
The heart of the festival is in the preparation. Students receive consistent music instruction, typically two times a week, in their classrooms. Here, they learn about vocal development, intonation, and music literacy—all fundamental skills that help them perform well in the festival and serve them throughout their lives. This foundational training enables the students to participate confidently in choirs, bands, orchestras, and a wide range of future musical pursuits.
The Choral Festival is an embodiment of the Provo City School District’s mission: to “Welcome. Educate. and Inspire.” The event brings together students from diverse backgrounds and different schools, creating a vibrant community centered around music. Each performance serves as both a reflection of the hard work the students have put in throughout the year and a chance to see what other schools have been learning. It’s an inspiring display of what can happen when young voices come together with a shared purpose.
The festival’s growth over the years mirrors the growth of the district’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education for its students. The event encourages a sense of pride in the music and in the broader district community. Parents, teachers, and students alike look forward to the event as a highlight of the school year. It’s a moment to celebrate the work that has been done, the friendships that have been formed, and the talents that are nurtured in the classrooms of Provo’s elementary schools.
The Choral Festival is the culmination of the work that each student and each teacher has put in throughout the year and their schooling as a whole. A single evening that strengthens the bonds between their peers and creates the start of connections they will take into secondary education. For students, it’s an opportunity to share their voices, grow as musicians, and be inspired by students from the school across the district.
For the district, it’s a reminder of the importance of nurturing creativity, community, and lifelong learning. The festival is a true reflection of the district’s ongoing mission to create a vibrant learning environment where students are inspired to be lifelong learners and engaged community members.
