Teaching math is no small feat. Math is a subject that challenges even the most skilled educators, making it all the more impressive when a teacher excels. Amy Harris, then, an 8th-grade math teacher at Shoreline Middle School, is truly one of our finest; she is an exemplary educator, recently receiving recognition as the December USBE Secondary Math Teacher of the Month. She received a highlight in the Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics email newsletter, and we wanted to reiterate their commendation: Amy Harris is exceptional.
Harris is an innovator who finds new and effective teaching practices in math education. She has been at the forefront of integrating the district’s task-based instruction and assessment strategies; in her classroom, students regularly engage in number talks and open-ended math tasks, encouraging them to explore concepts and take learning into their own hands as active participants.
As part of the district math professional learning community’s study of Building Thinking Classrooms, Amy embraced new approaches to teaching that prioritize student engagement and collaboration. Her work has inspired students and colleagues, creating meaningful discussion and problem-solving opportunities in math.
Amy is renowned for her willingness to share ideas and collaborate with other teachers. She teaches compassion, kindness, and a learning mindset, not only in her classroom but in the way she treats everyone around her.
Congratulations to Amy on this well-earned acknowledgment! Thank you for uplifting our students, staff, community, city.
