“I think she should be recognized because she is always so kind and a very nice person,” shared Shoreline Middle School student Miki Fukuyasu. “Ms. Duering is constantly responding to almost anything with kindness. She always has a positive attitude.”

Miki is talking about Torri Duering, a remarkable Shoreline Middle School English and Drama teacher who received the Provo Way Award through this heartfelt student nomination.

Through monthly Provo Way Awards, the Provo City School District and Board of Education highlight and celebrate the positive impact that students, teachers, administrators, parents, and staff have on our community.

Teaching is more than content for teachers like Torri—they offer a lending hand, firm direction, and a safe space. Torri– and teachers like her– inspire learning in and out of the classroom. It’s this warmth and dedication to her students that compelled Miki’s nomination:

“She teaches students very well and is willing to help if they have questions about anything,” Miki wrote. “Ms. Duering is very willing to talk to you if you are having a bad day or just need to get it out of your system.”

Dureing’s kindness and willingness to be supportive means the world to her students. To close:

“She is also very welcoming. I think she is one of the kindest people you will ever meet and get to know.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Thank you, Torri, and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.
