Recently, Provo High students have been examining different pairs of genes, but they haven’t had to visit a clothing store to do so.
In Lorien Francis and David Kent’s Biology classes, students are learning how to extract DNA from pea soup.
Using Nearpod, an interactive presentation and assessment tool, Lorien and David utilized student Chromebooks to guide student through this DNA lesson. Students started off the lesson by watching an informative video about DNA and were then guided through several interactive slides and followed up by a quick assessment quiz.
Students then attempted to perform the extraction independently using a “pea soup” mix made by their teachers. The students added soap and eventually alcohol to the mix. Then slowly by twirling a wooden stick in the mixture, they were able to pull out strands of DNA.
