Yesterday, the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) awarded Provo Peak’s Mrs. Mesenbrink the Science of Reading award. Mrs. Mesenbrink was honored for her mastery of the Science of Reading program in her 3rd-grade classroom. Only a total of 13 teachers were honored throughout Utah.
Beginning in 2021, USBE invested in professional learning for K–3 general education teachers, special education teachers, coaches, principals, and local education agency leaders in the Science of Reading to improve literacy instruction and student outcomes. As educators began completing their professional learning, USBE observed classrooms across the state, looking at how teachers implemented what they had learned.
This award honors teachers and school leaders who have gone above and beyond to implement the Science of Reading through instruction and interventions and to advance reading outcomes in their schools and classrooms. USBE seeks out teachers like Mrs. Mesenbrink, who have continued to examine and adjust reading instruction based on data, participated in personal learning, and worked to create a supportive culture within their schools and classrooms.
Congratulations, Mrs. Mesenbrink. We are proud to have you teaching in our halls.
