In a world dominated by digital photography, there’s something magical and intentional art of film photography. At Timpview, this magic has found a home in the Film Photography Club. This unique club, founded by Amelia Gibbs, invites students to explore the art and craft of film photography in an accessible and hands-on way.
So, what exactly is the Film Photography Club? According to Amelia, it’s much more than just snapping pictures. “I started this club because I wanted to create a community for students who love film photography or want to learn about it,” she shared. “Not everyone has the time to take both photography classes to gain access to the darkroom, so I wanted to make it more accessible.”
The club meets every other Thursday in Mrs. Jelte room. Each meeting offers the chance to work in film camera, learn and experiment with the darkroom, and dive into creative projects. From cyanotypes to pin-hole cameras, every activity is designed to make film photography fun and approachable, whether they’re seasoned photographers or beginners.
One of the biggest draws of film photography, according to Amelia, is its hands on, intentional nature. “I think film teaches you how to slow down,” she explained. “Every shot matters because film is expensive, and you only get so many frames. It’s thoughtful, it’s deliberate, and it captures more feeling and intent than digital photography.”
Amelia’s passion for film is contagious, and her excitement shined through in every club meeting. She always remembers the first day of the club when everyone created cyanotypes. “I was so nervous about how it would turn out, but it ended up being amazing. So many people came, and everyone had a great time.”
Even when activities don’t go exactly to plan, like the pinhole camera project, Amelia Gibbs sees the value in experimenting and learning together as a club. “I enjoy activities that help people open up their creativity and get excited about things they didn’t think they could do before,” Amelia says. “You don’t need a fancy film camera; you can make one out of a tin can!”
The film photography club has fostered a sense of community and creativity. Members have access to film cameras and the school’s darkroom, removing barriers for students who might not get the chance to explore analog photography within the club. So whether you want to mess with some chemicals in the darkroom, or just hang out with creative people, there’s something for everyone at Film Photography Club!
