On October 23, Health Science students from the Provo Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) gained hands-on experience at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. The visit was a chance for students to step into a real healthcare setting and see how professionals work with patients.
CAPS Medicine & Health Science Instructor Erica Persson sees visits like these as essential for students serious about pursuing healthcare careers. This year, students in the program are preparing to take a national exam to become certified ECG Technicians.
“ECG certification is a credential that demonstrates the student’s knowledge and skills in using an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine to collect and analyze data about a patient’s heart,” Persson says. “Students can become ECG Technicians to work in a clinical setting, perform and record ECGs, monitor cardiac activity, and analyze cardiac rhythms. They’ll work under the supervision of licensed medical professionals.”
Through the course, students develop the necessary skills to operate ECG machines and collect and interpret heart data, which are critical for diagnosing cardiac conditions.
Partnerships like the one here with Timpanogos Regional make CAPS special. And, thanks to instructors like Persson, CAPS continues to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional experiences, supplying students with invaluable certifications and making a fundamental difference as they step into their chosen field.
