Kaleb Money, Provo High’s welding teacher, aims to show his students how skills they learn in his classroom can be applied in the real world.
“They are all working on some really cool stuff,” Money says, “I want them to recognize the value in what they’re creating.”
In recent years, an annual fundraising effort included students making roses out of metal. However, Money has changed things up.
This year, Provo High’s welding students are making new pieces, using some of the best equipment in the industry.
“Having the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine has made the process of making metal art a lot easier,” says Money.
Once students upload a design they are wanting to make, computer software translates their design into numbers. These numbers then serve as coordinates on the metal sheet.
“The green liquid the sheet lays in is a very diluted coolant,” explained a student,”It basically prevents the metal from being melted, and lets the machine just cut it instead.”
Money’s welding students are truly inspiring and extremely knowledgable. These high school juniors and seniors are rebuilding a drag bike, making metal roses, working with huge machines, and making Money proud.
You can order your metal art by direct messaging the department through Facebook or Instagram. Once the order is placed, payments are collected through the Business Office. Please notify the welders through Facebook or Instagram when you’ve made your payment, and they will begin working on your piece. Once your piece is complete, you will be notified, and can pick it up at the welding shop at Provo High School.
