Today is a special day for the Provo Adult Education program because it is graduation day!

For many students, this has been a long anticipated journey. These students had always wanted to graduate school, but there were obstacles that held them back.

One student dropped out of school to return to El Salvador so she could take care of her ill grandparents. “I was raised by my grandparents,” she said. “So I decided to leave because I knew no one in my family could take care of them like I could.”

While she was there, she tried pursuing school, but found it hard to balance work and life.

“I tried to finish school there,” she said. “But it was too hard. I decided to just keep working and looking after my grandparents.”

After four years she had the opportunity to move back to the U.S. and enrolled in the Provo Adult Education program. “I now have a better chance of obtaining my long-term goals! Now I’m working towards becoming a flight attendant.”

“I didn’t know english very well,” another student stated. “So I left school so I could provide for my family.”

The ability to make money instead of being in school was a huge motivator for many.

“I thought $250 a week was good money, but that was a teenage phase.”

“I have a three-year-old girl, but good paying jobs are only hiring people with a high school diploma or GED. So I decided to enroll in the Provo Adult Education program because I had heard good things.”

Once he started, he said he was pleasantly surprised and realized, “I knew more than I thought I did.”

“It was a big boost to my self-esteem,” another student proudly stated.

“Once I get my diploma, I am going to show it to my boss and ask for a raise. I feel like I can get any job I want.”

The Provo City School District wants to congratulate all the graduates on their triumphs and achievements!

Tonight’s graduation will be held at Independence High School, 636 North Independence Avenue, Provo, on December 18, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. MST.
