Policy 5720: School Employee Firearm Possession on District Grounds

The Provo City School District Board of Education and Superintendent are tasked with ensuring that the district’s schools are safe places wherein students, staff, and parents work collaboratively to ensure learning is at an optimum without worry of unsafe conditions disrupting the learning environment.

This policy addresses school employees’ abilities and rights to possess a firearm in the disposition of their duties, and to ensure that proper training and handling of firearms on school grounds by school employees is in accordance with laws as prescribed by statute in the state of Utah. The Board of Education, therefore, tasks the Superintendent to adopt policies and procedures that address HB119 and its directives regarding employees’ possession and training in firearms safety.

District employees are tasked with following the statute in question and will abide by the law regarding possession of firearms on district grounds, and will abide by all training requirements outlined in HB 119. The district is also tasked with ensuring that all employees who carry a firearm on District grounds are tracked, provided with the proper training as prescribed in the statute, and hold the proper permit to possess a weapon on their person. Any violation of this policy may result in disciplinary measures by the district, and punishment as prescribed within the statute.
