Each week, Superintendent Wendy Dau shares a video update with the Provo City community, providing important news and insights on Provo City School District. Tune in each week for her latest video update to stay informed on all the key events and developments in our schools.

Hello, Provo City. I am Superintendent Dau from the Provo City School District and today is Monday, January 6th. We know that our students will be returning to school tomorrow on January 7th, but we are all back in full force here at work with a professional learning day and teacher preparation day as we’re winding down the last day of the semester and teachers are preparing grades and progress reports, all of the good things that come with the end of the term.

We hope you’ve had a fantastic holiday break, that you’ve been able to spend some time with those that you love, and be able to appreciate just the spirit of the season and what a wonderful time of year it is. We just want to update you on a couple of things. First and foremost, this month is Utah School Board’s Member Appreciation Month.

Uh, we would love it if you would reach out to our school board. We have a fantastic school board in Provo City School District. They dedicate so much time and energy to serving our public schools, and our students, and our families. They are such great listeners. They really want to understand concerns and issues and they want to problem solve in a positive way, and they are not compensated, for the amount of time that they put in.

They truly are a public servant and truly are trying to make our schools the very best and to make our district a destination district here in Provo. So a big shout out to all of them and all of the great work that they do. Next Tuesday we do have a board meeting. One of the Items of discussion that will come up is the Utah Fits All scholarship and whether Provo City School District would like to be a vendor for this.

You can tune into that conversation. The school board did discuss this at their December meeting, and they have asked us as district leaders to provide some additional information about districts that have chosen to be those vendors as to what the actual costs are and the burdens that are placed on administrative staff and teachers in that, in that process. So more to come on that.

We are working with the association on some updates to our parent teacher conferences. We know that our parent teacher conferences are highly successful in elementary schools, and we need to really kind of think about some ways in which we can make them more effective at the secondary level and what this means might look like.

We also want to make sure that we are requiring the same amount of work and effort from our elementary and secondary teachers in this process and that we are getting the outcomes that we want to have. So as we create these proposals, we’re going to bring those to our parent advisory committees and get some feedback from our parents as well as to what they would like to see continue or things that need to be changed with regard to this.

Our policy committee meets twice a month. We are working on updating our non-discrimination and sexual harassment policies for both students and employees. We are working on safe routes, conversation, hazardous routes, courtesy stops and really defining all of these pieces of transportation more carefully so that we have consistency across all schools when we have safe routes committees, school community councils that are requesting certain pieces. to be added or certain things to be considered as, as we’re looking at, the safe travel of students to and from school. So that will be discussed in policy committee with a proposal coming to the next board meeting on next week on January 14th.

We also want to give a big shout out to Wasatch Elementary. If you happen to be in that particular area, please give your teachers some extra love. They are packing up their classrooms. They’re trying to manage this transition of where their classrooms are packed up and they’re trying to, um, move everything over to the new building and keeping everything consistent and just providing meaningful learning opportunities.

Uh, if you can also give Principal Snow some love, I know she would appreciate it. This is definitely a stressful time for her and we appreciate our facilities and maintenance teams and construction teams and all of the work that they’re putting into getting furniture put together and getting everything moved so that we can start school on Wednesday, January 15th in the new building.

We are very excited about that. So just a big shout out to all of them. Just want you to be aware that the legislative session begins in a couple of weeks. There are several education bills that are coming forward. We would love for you to be engaged with your legislators about things that concern you about education.

If you have questions about particular bills and their impact on education, I know that a lot of individuals have reached out to me, for example, about the school safety bill that was passed last year and just some concerns that have come up as a result of that. And so just really trying to help you be informed about how that legislation is impacting our students and our teachers.

We are really asking that that our legislators be mindful of how many bills that they pass, um, simply because it takes us a lot of energy and time to update our policies, and many the concerns that we have can be solved at the local level. And so we would always rather have problems solved at the closest level to our constituents as possible.

Minding that the fact that we have, you know, very different types of school districts and very different demographics across the state and what works in this area may not be applicable in another area. It allows us to be more responsive to the needs of our communities. So with that, we welcome all of you back.

It is an exciting time. We know that January can be kind of bleak, but we are excited to welcome your students tomorrow. And hope you’ve all had a wonderful break. See you soon.
