When reunited, the Provo High and Timpanogos Elementary duos beamed with delight. It was hard to tell who was more thrilled to see each other! After high fives, fist bumps and bright smiles were exchanged, the partnerships got to work on their assigned tasks.

From reading to Mathematics, the Latinos in Action (LIA) students of Provo High were there to help assist and tutor the elementary students.

“When these younger kids see my students help them from a position of leadership, it is something that they aspire and look up to.” said Provo High LIA Coordinator Jessica Theurer. “We are like one big family! We cry, laugh, dance and talk about racial stereotypes.”

When the LIA students tutor, participate in leadership committees, practice public speaking, and develop their strengths, they are confidently applying their skills to explore other arenas like student council/government. Instead of shunning their cultural heritage, they infuse it into their school to help enrich clubs and classes.

“It’s nice that the students have a place to gather and celebrate their culture,” said Theurer. “They have a new evolving culture of bilingualism and biculturalism, and it is great to see them take ownership and be proud of that.”

Thanks Provo High LIA for taking the time to help mentor the youth. We look forward to the many things you’ll continue to accomplish this year!
