There’s a lot of heavy holiday foods with hefty recipes and hard on the wallet. Thankfully, our friends in Child Nutrition sent over two tasty bite-sized recipes before the holiday break as an early present.

These are nutritionally balanced meals that we use to treat our students, so if you want a sneak peak into the lunch lives of your students, give this a go, and enjoy this flavorful lasagna as a family!

Whole Grain Lasagna – Melt away the holiday blues with a generous portion of this mouth-watering lasagna. Serves 16, which rivals the Stouffers lasagna serving sizes, tastes just as decadent, yet comes out as a more nutritiously balanced meal. Ingredients: Ground Beef, 81/19, 2 ½ lbs. (We use Five River Farms, if you’re cooking along at home.)

  1. Onion, Dehydrated, ⅙ cup.
  2. Garlic Powder, Sysco Classic. 1 tablespoon.
  3. Lasagna Noodle, Whole Grain, Barilla. 1 box.
  4. Marinara Sauce, 1 can.
  5. Italian Seasoning Mix, ¼ cup.
  6. Light Mozzarella Cheese. ¾ lb.
  7. Shredded Mild Cheddar Cheese. ¼ lb.

Recipe:

  1. Brown your ground beef in your tilt skillet or kettle until meat is heated through and reaches 155F.
  2. Drain and rinse meat with hot water. Return meat to skillet and add your dehydrated onions and garlic powder to and stir to combine.
  3. Add marinara sauce and Italian seasoning to seasoned meat and heat through.

If you like this recipe, remember that your child might have access to this food for free or at a reduced price at school, which you can sign up for at any time. Find out if your family can receive free or reduced lunch on the MySchoolApps website.

We hope our recipe keeps your Christmas cooking light– and, more importantly, lightens your holiday season. Have a wonderful break!
