Veronica Gao: Centennial Middle School’s Dual-State Winner

It’s easy to lose track of your accomplishments in the hustle and bustle of graduation. During this fast paced and transitory time, we want to recognize students, teachers, and staff for their outstanding efforts.

We’re highlighting extraordinary work from our district’s students and employees throughout May; we hope that everyone can take in the moment and enjoy their victories before the summer season.

Today’s highlighted student is Veronica Gao, an 8th Grader at Centennial Middle School. Veronica Gao came highly recommended by several teachers, but Teacher and TSA Advisor David Barnett’s recommendation sums up her accomplishments succinctly. “Veronica is incredible; not only is she our TSA chapter’s President, but she won two state events and is involved in Student Government, Yearbook, and Art. She’s also super service-oriented. I’m not sure how she does it all.”

Veronica Gao chooses to understate her numerous accomplishments. She often attributes her success to help from family. When I asked her to tell me about herself, she started with a description of her family.

“I’m from here, but my parents aren’t. My parents came to the US in their twenties. I’ve got three older sisters and a younger brother. My older sisters are in graduate school– the oldest is majoring in Chemical Engineering, and the two younger sisters are majoring in Computer Science.”

I then asked her about her other interests, like art. Other teachers have mentioned her aptitude for the arts. She replied that “it’s hard to make a living from art, but it’s a fun hobby. It’s a family hobby– All of my siblings create art. I’ve liked watercolor recently– it all clicks. I spend a lot of my free time making art at home.”

She looks to differ from her older siblings’ footsteps, mentioning that she likes STEM activities like engineering or coding, but her true love is law. Her goal is to earn a law degree. Veronica’s more specific interest in law and language has led her to succeed in the presentation and text-heavy TSA competition categories.

“I competed in the “Prepared Speech” category– kind of self-explanatory– I wrote a speech and presented it to judges. I also competed in “Career Prep,” which was a simulated job interview. I wrote a resume and a cover letter for a job. I wrote my Resume and Cover Letter for a Software Engineer position. I asked my sisters’ many questions about what employers look for in Software Engineers and used that information to help tailor my resume.”

In her fashion, Veronica mentioned nerves about presenting. “Prepared Speech stressed me out. I not only had to write the speech but memorize it, too. And then I had to present it the week after. It was a four-minute speech, maybe 400 words. I was super nervous,” Veronica shared. From talking to her, one would never assume that she might be nervous presenting. Her interview was concise yet personable– I could see why she’s going to Nationals for her speech, regardless of any anxiety.

Veronica says that she wants to continue doing TSA throughout high school. “My sisters were in similar high school clubs and competitions, and I want to follow in their footsteps. I’d like to try my hand in a debate club, more specifically. My long-term plan is law, so I think that debate is one avenue I need to pursue.”

Veronica Gao is a student going places. Veronica is aiming for Harvard University. After speaking with Veronica, I can’t help but feel that she’ll be a front-runner for a Harvard Law spot.

Veronica Gao: La ganadora de la escuela secundaria Centennial de dos estados

Es fácil perder la pista de tus logros en el ajetreo de la graduación. Durante este tiempo transitorio, queremos asegurarnos de reconocer a los estudiantes por sus esfuerzos sobresalientes: han trabajado mucho este año y merecen el reconocimiento. Para mostrar su trabajo, estamos destacando a los estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria que se gradúan durante todo el mes de mayo; esperamos que puedan aprovechar el momento y disfrutar de la vuelta de la victoria este mes antes del verano.

La estudiante de hoy es Veronica Gao, una alumna de 8º grado de Centennial Middle School. Veronica Gao fue altamente recomendada por varios profesores, pero la recomendación del profesor y consejero de la TSA, David Barnett, resume sucintamente algunos de sus logros. “Verónica es increíble; no sólo es la presidenta de nuestro capítulo de TSA, sino que ganó dos eventos estatales y está involucrada en el gobierno estudiantil, el anuario y el arte. También está muy orientada al servicio. No sé cómo lo hace todo”.

Veronica Gao opta por subestimar sus numerosos logros. A menudo atribuye su éxito a la ayuda de su familia. Cuando le pedí que me hablara de sí misma, empezó con una descripción de su familia.

“Soy de aquí, pero mis padres no lo son. Mis padres llegaron a Estados Unidos a los veinte años. Tengo tres hermanas mayores y un hermano menor. Mis hermanas mayores están en la escuela de posgrado -la mayor se está especializando en Ingeniería Química, y las dos hermanas menores se están especializando en Ciencias de la Computación”.

Luego le pregunté por sus otros intereses, como el arte. Otros profesores han mencionado su aptitud para las artes. Me contestó que “es difícil vivir del arte, pero es una afición divertida. Es una afición familiar: todos mis hermanos crean arte. Últimamente me gusta la acuarela, todo encaja. Paso mucho tiempo libre haciendo arte”.

Busca diferenciarse de los pasos de sus hermanos mayores, mencionando que le gustan las actividades STEM como la ingeniería o la codificación, pero su verdadero amor es el derecho. Su objetivo es obtener una licenciatura en Derecho. El interés más específico de Verónica por el derecho y el lenguaje la ha llevado a triunfar en las categorías de competición de la TSA de presentación y texto.

“Compitió en la categoría de “Discurso preparado”, que se explica por sí misma: escribió un discurso y lo presentó a los jueces. También competí en “Preparación para la carrera”, que era una entrevista de trabajo simulada. Escribí un currículum y una carta de presentación para un trabajo. Escribí mi currículum y mi carta de presentación para un puesto de ingeniero de software. Hice muchas preguntas a mis hermanas sobre lo que los empleadores buscan en los ingenieros de software y utilicé esa información para ayudar a adaptar mi currículum”.

A su manera, Verónica mencionó los nervios por la presentación. “El discurso preparado me estresó. No sólo tenía que escribir el discurso, sino también memorizarlo. Y luego tuve que presentarlo la semana siguiente. Qué asco. Era un discurso de cuatro minutos, de unas 400 palabras. Estaba muy estresada”, dice Verónica. Al hablar con ella, uno nunca supondría que pudiera estar nerviosa al presentar. Su entrevista fue concisa y a la vez personal, y pude ver por qué va a ir a los nacionales por su discurso, independientemente de la ansiedad.

Verónica dice que quiere seguir haciendo TSA a lo largo de la escuela secundaria. “Mis hermanas participaron en clubes y competiciones similares en el instituto, y quiero seguir sus pasos. Me gustaría probar suerte en un club de debate, más concretamente. Mi plan a largo plazo es el derecho, así que creo que el debate es una vía que debo seguir”.

Veronica Gao es una estudiante que va a más. Verónica aspira a entrar en la Universidad de Harvard. Después de hablar con Verónica, no puedo evitar pensar que será una de las principales candidatas a una plaza en Derecho en Harvard.
