Title I Reading Program Sparks Family Values, Culture

A Timpanogos Elementary school Reading program has Title I coordinators shouting its praises. Created by Timpanogos Title I Coordinator, Kate Pace, this program titled The Family Reading Challenge is receiving attention and recognition from all over the state. 

Here’s how it works:

In this challenge, the family chooses a book to read together by filling out an online survey. The book is sent home with the child and the families discuss the prompt questions that spark conversations that gain perspectives from each family member. For example, “Do you agree with the character’s choices?”

Using these questions, families are able to listen and discuss concepts that require critical thinking.

But it’s more. 

Families learn about their culture, their belief systems, their value systems, their commonalities, their differences, which, in turn, generates a deeper understanding and connection. 

After families finish their book, they are invited to send a book review with their photos. 

“It has been so rewarding to see many families take on this challenge,” said Pace. “We started this challenge at the beginning of January and have had more than 100 families participate.”

“Using Title 1 funds, we purchased a variety of books that would appeal to the diversity of their student population like Newberry and Caldecott winner books, picture books, Spanish titles, and more. Because of this funding, families get to keep the books they read so they can add it to their home library.”

“We have distributed over 175 books,” stated Pace. “We look forward to making more impact with this program.” 

We are thankful to our teachers like Kate who create multi-pronged approaches.  We expect to see more greatness come from this program.
