On November 11th, Timpview High School hosted their annual Veterans Day Assembly. Every year, in collaboration with the City of Provo as well as various other organizations and sponsors, Timpview High provides a celebration of the families and individuals who have sacrificed for our country. Community figures, veterans, and students are all invited to attend.

At the beginning of the event veterans were given special parking privileges and welcomed by the student body government. Event Chair Brinley Harrison welcomed all to the event. Following Harrison’s introduction, the THS Color Guard and Cheer team performed a presentation of the flags. Miss Provo, along with her royal court, sang the national anthem and led the audience in the pledge of allegiance.

Mayor Kaufusi then addressed the audience with a touching personal story about the importance of representative democracy and the beauty of immigration. Kaufusi’s speech was followed by a performance of the Armed Forces Medley by the Timpview High School Band.

The Armed Forces Medley is a mashup of the themes from each branch of the armed services, played back to back to each other. While each theme is played, members of the audience who have friends and family who served in that branch, or who have served in that branch themselves, were invited to stand in respect.

Following the medley, two spotlight speeches were given from members of the student body with veterans in their family. Specialist Third Class Robert Edmunds was honored by his granddaughter, Rachel Lau. Sergeant Marine Corp Sensor Platoon Phillip S. Roberts Jr. was honored by his daughter, Joa Roberts. Between the two spotlights, the Timpview Ballroom 2 and JV Team performed Hey Pacheco.

The Timpview Men’s Chorus then performed For the Fallen as a tribute to those lost. All of this led to the keynote address for the event: an address from General Val Peterson. General Peterson graduated from BYU, as well as the United States Army War College. After retiring from the National Guard, General Peterson served in the Utah House of Representatives where he continues to serve to this day.

Provo City School district is grateful to Timpview High, the City of Provo, and all of the community members who contributed.
