Timpview FCCLA’s Quilts for Refugees and Days for Girls

For their second project this year, FCCLA took the hems of previously ongoing projects and interlaced their continuing efforts in creating quilts and hygiene products for those who need them.

Timpview’s FCCLA chapter partnered with Stitching Hearts Worldwide to tie quilts for Afghan refugees. Students also partnered with Days for Girls to create feminine hygiene kits for girls worldwide.

For those unfamiliar, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a Career and Technical Student Organization that functions as an integral part of the Family and Consumer Sciences education curriculum and operates within the school system. While advisors manage, direct, and counsel students, FCCLA students market, organize and work within service-based projects, much like this event.

Macey Bunn, Timpview High School’s FCS Teacher and FCCLA Advisor shared details on the event, disclosing the students’ work in bringing the quilts and kits to fruition.

“These are ongoing projects Timpview has been working on for a few years. The FCCLA officers prepared by creating flyers and recruiting classmates to help. On the event day, the officers showed the other students how to tie the quilts and sew the feminine hygiene products.”

Again, FCCLA managed to draw in a crowd for their projects, bringing in around forty to fifty students. 

“Students who could sew, sewed together backpacks. These little backpacks are how feminine hygiene products are put together into kits. We also had students cut out fabric, ironing and layering the fabric to prepare pads for sewing. The other students worked on tying the quilts.”

All students in attendance weaved their patchwork pieces together to assemble kits. 

“Students completed one quilt during the event but will continue working on quilts. FCCLA meets every other Friday to work on service projects. We will continue to work on the quilts and feminine hygiene products at our next activity and throughout the school year.”

With unfading resolve, FCCLA students work jointly to continue crafting quilts while moving on to their next project: food kits for Ukraine, partnering with Lifting Hands International. Timpview is collecting canned meats, vegetables, soup, and fruit; those who would like to donate can bring their donations to Timpview High School to pass on to FCCLA advisors Mrs. Nicholson, Ms. Bunn, and Mrs. Hutchings.
