The Whole World in 6th Graders’ Hands

With a month to prepare for the school-wide World’s Fair, Lakeview Elementary’s 6th grade class brought the whole world to Provo, Utah.

“A big focus for them this year has been research,” said a Lakeview 6th grade teacher, “We went over reliable sources and they learned the reality of not all things online being trustworthy.”

The students, in groups, chose a country, did some research, made a poster board, and some even brought food to share at the fair.

When choosing a country, students were inspired by their ancestry, family, travel experiences, and their favorite shows/characters. A group of three students reporting on Japan had two who’s parents or family had visited or lived there, while the third group member shared his interest in Anime, a style of Japanese film and television animation.

Another group chose Argentina. “My parents were born there,” shared a student. They continued to share about how their research helped them make connections to their parents’ stories.

“There was a student who was full of knowledge about their country,” said a 6th grade teacher. “I heard him talking to his mom while they finished his poster. It really warmed my heart to see how this research project taught him more than just not using Wikipedia, but helpful skills he will never forget.”

Fun facts about different countries, cool artifacts, and delicious treats made the 6th Grade Lakeview World’s Fair a great success.
