Recently, teachers from all parts of the Provo City School District got a chance to do some digging and exploring around the Fossil Butte National Monument.

The expedition started off with a trip to “America’s Aquarium in Stone,” which boasts an impressive, fossilized collection of fish and other forms of life from the Eocene Age (50-60 million years ago).

After spending time looking at fossils our group of teachers got a chance to see first-hand how the fossils are prepared and curated for public display. They then received a quick lesson on how to split, prep and identify fossils in the rock they were allowed to dig around for a few hours. Each teacher got to keep what they found and will be using it in their classrooms starting this fall.

All in all it was a fun, educational and beneficial trip for those who participated.
