Adapted P.E. has been working with the general education P.E. at all schools to help students with disabilities achieve more in the general P.E. setting. With this goal in mind, a grant was written for the Department of Wildlife Resources to get fishing equipment for the students to learn the art of fishing.
Provo City School District Adapted PE was given $850.00 to begin a fishing program. Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse also contributed fishing poles to this cause. This combined effort made it possible for 80 high school students to learn to fish this semester through their class called “Lifetime Sports/Activities”. In this class, students discover activities that they can find in their community and participate in when their school years are over. This class encourages lifetime of healthy choices with nutrition and activities of their choosing.
As part of this class this year, the students participated in a fishing unit which included instruction on the parts of a fishing pole, rules and regulations of fishing, items included in a fishing box, the art of casting and reeling and a field trip to Spring Lake Trout Farm in Payson. At the trout farm the students were able to catch a fish, watch it be cleaned and filleted. They were also able to feed the fish. Robert Judd, owner of the trout farm, spoke to the students about good ways of cooking the fish and also some tips on putting the bait on the hook. Many of the students had never been fishing, let alone touched a real fish.
This activity was a success and proved to be beneficial for cross-curricular learning, as it can include math, science, P.E., writing, history, and nutrition/health. Through this great activity, many students were able to be reached and benefited from learning about this lifetime skill.
Thank you to Cabela’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse and the Department of Wildlife Resources for their support and donations. Also, thank you to all those who worked to make this activity successful!
