School Board Makes Decision on Potential Bond

At Tuesday’s board meeting, the Provo City School District Board of Education announced plans to move forward with a $245 million bond on the November 2019 ballot.  This bond will address structural and safety issues at Timpview High School, Dixon Middle School, Wasatch Elementary School and Westridge Elementary School.  Additionally, the bond would address security issues at 10 other schools throughout the district.

The bond would allot $5 million for security upgrades in schools across the district. The upgrades would include more secure entrances, improved camera systems (including servers), and a handful of other security measures.  These changes would be made at Centennial Middle School, Independence High School, Lakeview Elementary School, Amelia Earhart Elementary School, Timpanogos Elementary School, Westridge Elementary School, Canyon Crest Elementary School, Provo Peaks Elementary School, Spring Creek Elementary School and Franklin Elementary School.

The bond would also include an complete rebuild of Wasatch Elementary School on its current site.  The projected cost for this project is $30 million.  A $10 million classroom addition would be added at Westridge Elementary School.  This addition allows the portables that have been used for many years to be removed and all students will be housed inside the school building.

The board is proposing that Timpview High School undergoes a rebuild of any part of the building that is not currently sitting on a pier system.  The rebuild would take place in phases on the current site and will retain newer sections such as the Thunderdome and the track and field.  The estimated cost for this project would be $145 million, with an estimated construction time of 3 to 3.5 years.

The board is also proposing that Dixon Middle School be moved to district owned land in the area near Footprinters Park.  The total cost for this project would be $55 million and construction is estimated to take 2 years.

This announcement is sure to raise many questions from members of the Provo community.  Currently, a Frequently Asked Questions document about Timpview High School and Dixon Middle School is posted on the Provo City School District website.  In the coming days, more information about the overall bond and the other schools addressed on the bond will be posted.
