Provo High and Timpview Robotics Move to World Championship

Imagine go-kart-sized robots capable of accelerating about corners and on angles with startling speed. Imagine these robots competing amongst other robots within a metallic Gladiator-style ring, and at the center of that ring towers a hoop, some ten feet above the ground. Around the hoop sit colored dodgeballs. Imagine robot teams competing against other bots tasked to deftly collect dodgeballs with robotic appendages before winging them sky-high into the basket to outscore the other team. Imagine a referee, an enthused announcer, a megaplex-esque screen behind the action to keep score and capture the blow-by-blow action. Now imagine that the students piloting the bots are our high-school students. You don’t need to imagine it; you need to see it.

Provo High School Robotics and Electronic Teacher Shannon Quan took her rookie team, “Provotypes – 6844,” to the Robotics Regional Championships in West Valley at the Maverik Center, April 7-9, 2022. Other teams poured in from Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, California, Hawaii, and even Taiwan with the dream of advancing to the World Championships.

The Provotypes team contains four Provo High students, three Timpview High students, and because they’re the only team in Utah County, one Mountain View High student, and two homeschool students. The Provotype students are new to the competition– Shannon Quan and more than eight of the ten students in the team have never competed in robotics.

The students have been meeting, designing, building, and coding the robot since the 2022 season’s opening on January 8th and tinkered and toiled on their robots until the competition.

“The team competes as an individual entity for several ranking matches in the last two days,” outlined Shannon Quan. “The top eight-seeded teams then chose two other teams to form alliances with. Teams scouted competition during the ranking matches to see who they would want to have in their alliance, and judges chose our team to be part of the top-ranked team because of our robot’s climbing ability.”

Their team competed in the quarterfinal, semifinal, and finals match. Their team alliance served win after win, boasting an unblemished winning record– until the finals. The Provotypes passed through the semifinal round but received a massive penalty. Students nervously awaited the results, realizing they needed to win their final by 10 points in a best-of-three battle to advance to the World Championship.

The Provotypes managed to pull off the win and are headed to Houston to compete against 500 other teams from around the world in the World Championship. Congratulations to Provotypes 6844 on their accomplishment; pulling off a feat as a rookie team is no small feat, and we wish them luck as they prepare for Houston.

Imagina robots del tamaño de un kart capaz de acelerar en las curvas y en los ángulos con una velocidad asombrosa. Imagínese que estos robots compiten con otros robots dentro de un aro metálico al estilo de los Gladiadores, y que en el centro de ese aro se eleva un aro, a unos tres metros del suelo. Alrededor del aro hay balones de colores. Imagina equipos de robots compitiendo contra otros robots que deben recoger hábilmente los balones con apéndices robóticos antes de lanzarlos a la canasta para superar al otro equipo. Imagina un árbitro, un locutor entusiasmado, una pantalla tipo megaplex detrás de la acción para llevar el marcador y capturar la acción golpe a golpe. Ahora imagina que los estudiantes que pilotan los robots son nuestros estudiantes de secundaria. No hace falta imaginarlo, hay que verlo.

La profesora de robótica y electrónica de Provo High School, Shannon Quan, llevó a su equipo novato, “Provotypes – 6844”, a los campeonatos regionales de robótica en West Valley, en el Maverik Center, del 7 al 9 de abril de 2022. Otros equipos llegaron desde Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, California, Hawaii e incluso Taiwán con el sueño de avanzar a los Campeonatos Mundiales.

El equipo Provotypes está formado por cuatro estudiantes de Provo High, tres de Timpview High y, por ser el único equipo del condado de Utah, un estudiante de Mountain View High y dos estudiantes de educación en casa. Los estudiantes de Provotype son nuevos en la competición: Shannon Quan y más de ocho de los diez estudiantes del equipo nunca han competido en robótica.

Los estudiantes han estado reuniéndose, diseñando, construyendo y codificando el robot desde la apertura de la temporada 2022, el 8 de enero, y han estado trabajando en sus robots hasta la competición.

“El equipo compite como entidad individual en varios partidos de clasificación en los dos últimos días”, explicó Shannon Quan. “Los ocho primeros clasificados eligieron entonces a otros dos equipos para formar alianzas. Los equipos exploraron a la competencia durante los partidos de clasificación para ver a quién querrían tener en su alianza, y los jueces eligieron a nuestro equipo para formar parte del equipo mejor clasificado por la capacidad de escalada de nuestro robot.”

Su equipo compitió en el partido de cuartos de final, semifinal y final. Su alianza de equipos sirvió victoria tras victoria, ostentando un récord de victorias intachable… hasta la final. Los Provotypes pasaron la ronda de semifinales, pero recibieron una enorme penalización. Los estudiantes esperaron nerviosos los resultados, dándose cuenta de que necesitaban ganar su final por 10 puntos en una batalla al mejor de tres para avanzar al Campeonato Mundial.

Los Provotypes consiguieron la victoria y se dirigen a Houston para competir contra otros 500 equipos de todo el mundo en el Campeonato Mundial. Enhorabuena a Provotypes 6844 por su logro; conseguir una hazaña como equipo novato no es poca cosa, y les deseamos suerte mientras se preparan para Houston.
