March COVID-19 Vaccines Utahn Eligibility

Intermountain Healthcare is offering limited COVID-19 vaccines to eligible Utahns beginning in early March and on an ongoing basis. They expect to have increased supplies in the coming weeks and months. Vaccines are free of charge to individuals, with or without insurance. Read the details below.

In March, Utahns eligible to receive vaccines at the clinics (following the guidance of the Utah Department of Health) are:

• Individuals age 65 and older
• Individuals 16+ with certain medical conditions (Pfizer supports 16+, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson support 18+)
• Healthcare workers
• First responders like EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and corrections officers
• Long-term care facility staff and residents
• K-12 school teachers or staff

During the morning on Monday, March 1, Intermountain will open appointments for eligible Utahns who haven’t already received the COVID-19 vaccine, to schedule their first dose online at Intermountain.com/covidvaccine.

Appointments will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Individuals who need help making an appointment or have questions about the vaccine can call the Intermountain COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 1-877-777-0566 (available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week). Local health departments can also help people find other vaccine appointment opportunities if needed.

The first week of March, Utah, and Intermountain will be receiving doses of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, by Johnson & Johnson. The vaccine, which requires one dose instead of two, has been proven safe and effective in clinical trials—66% effective at preventing COVID-19 infection and 85% effective at preventing severe disease, both determined 28 days after vaccination. Like the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine prevents severe illness, hospitalization, and death. These vaccines are supported by the Utah Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and Intermountain.

We will have limited vaccine supplies the first week of March at the Intermountain hospitals listed below.

These hospitals will offer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine this first week, and Utah Valley Hospital will offer Johnson & Johnson and also Pfizer. NOTE: eligible individuals must be 18 and older for Johnson & Johnson, and can be 16 and older to receive Pfizer (16- and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to provide consent to vaccination).

Note: Individuals will NOT be eligible to be vaccinated if any of the following scenarios apply:

Known, unprotected exposure to COVID-19 within the last 14 days. An individual is eligible to be vaccinated after the quarantine period has ended. Current COVID-19 infection. The CDC recommends waiting 90 days after recovering from COVID-19 before starting the vaccine series. Immediate allergic reaction (within 4 hours) to polysorbate. Received another vaccine (of any kind) in the last 14 days. An individual is eligible 14 days after receiving any other vaccine.

On the day of the vaccine appointment individuals should:

Bring a smartphone so staff can assist in scheduling the second-dose appointment. Individuals without a smartphone should print out the email confirmation if possible and bring that copy to the appointment. The COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline (1-877-777-0566, available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week) can support people without a smartphone or email access.

Plan on staying onsite for a 15- to 30-minute observation period after vaccination.

Not bring others with them to the appointment if possible. Intermountain has visitor and companion guidelines to help reduce the risk for COVID-19 exposure in our facilities. Our vaccine clinics allow one designated person to accompany an individual receiving a vaccine if the individual needs support maneuvering through the facility or the vaccine process.
