In the middle last month, Independence High fashioned their library as a Cafe and invited their students to share stories with each other. The lights were dimmed, and the tables were set with electric candles and light lunches to enhance the environment.

Before the event, students recorded their stories in a trailer-turned-recording studio parked by the portables. Some of the students recorded memories from their personal histories, while others told fiction they wrote, or folk-tales from their cultural background. In celebration of the halloween season, most stories had supernatural twists, featuring ghosts and other haunted themes.

The event is another entry in Independence High’s goal to bring education and learning in a personalized way to its students and create an environment that engages students with more types of learning than is simply found in a textbook.
