Between whizzing robots and sit-in Tesla model cars, female students from our district caught a glimpse into the work-life of people in the modern tech world.

Independence High School students joined more than 2,000 other girls at the She-Tech 2022 Conference. The She-Tech event offers more than 40 hands-on, STEM-related workshop sessions in programming, engineering, aerospace, eSports and VR, and other tech subjects. The event aims to introduce girls to technology in a fun atmosphere while they meet STEM role models to learn more about opportunities in those fields. These attendees had access to internship and career pathway info.

“I’ve always liked engineering, and going to She-Tech was a blast,” said Sophia Hilton, a Senior at Independence. “They had different engineering booths; I remember they covered Civil and Chemical Engineering. I have a plan to do Engineering for the Army– a friend told me in the field that they spend time building schools in developing countires.”

“The aquarium exhibit was fun,” shared Ashley Hernandez, a student from Independence High School. “They spoke about tank upkeep and how they care for the animals using new technology.”

Ashley’s older sister, Lesly, mentioned her favorite stall. “We visited game developers. Their newest games were on display, and we got to play their demos after learning about the development process. I think game development would be a cool job.”

“There’s another stall that makes childcare products,” said Jessica Naranjo. “I saw a tracker that a parent would place on a baby’s foot that measures the baby’s heart rates and stress levels– working on a product like that would be interesting.”

After the event, attendee Yuvia Herrea is volunteering for the She-Tech student board for next year and will represent Independence High.

The Tech industry needs fresh ideas, new blood, and a more varied workforce. At the She-Tech 2022 Conference, girls statewide had a chance to look down the horizon and trace a path towards life in a burgeoning industry that desperately needs them– students like Sophia, Lesly, Ashley, Yuvia, and Jessica.
