There have understandably been many questions regarding graduations for this year’s students – including high school, 6th grade and kindergarten graduations. The district and schools have worked closely with teachers, students, and parent groups to create a plan for 2020 graduations that are meaningful, and in accordance to state guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many elementary schools traditionally celebrate kindergarten and 6th grade graduations. Each elementary school may plan and coordinate holding these events virtually and following health department guidelines. Schools will be communicating these plans directly with parents and students. Please reach out to your school with any questions or for details regarding these graduations.
High school graduation is the pinnacle of a student’s school experience, and it has come to represent the passing of the student from youth to adulthood. The importance of this tradition to students, parents, and teachers cannot be overstated. The district and high schools are committed to providing some means to celebrate the accomplishment of these students. Accordingly, the high schools have determined the following as alternative celebrations.
Each school will develop a highlight video capturing the accomplishments of the senior class or a video of a virtual graduation ceremony. Every effort will be made to ensure that each member of the senior class is reflected in the video. The video will be produced so it can be shared with extended family members, as well as immediate family. Schools will release the videos at the following time:
Each graduating senior and their family will travel by auto to the school to receive their diploma cover. As the auto approaches the point of presentation, family members will remain in the auto as the senior exits to receive the diploma. Students may be assigned specific times to come to the school. Schools will provide each family with specific details for each student/family. During the procession, participants must adhere to all social distancing guidelines.
A traditional graduation ceremony may be offered later in the summer or fall if health guidelines have changed. This is dependent upon the number of seniors interested in participating and the availability of a sufficient venue. It may be held jointly in combination with the district’s traditional Fall Graduation ceremony.
